Native to the forests of southern China and southeastern Asia, they are most commonly found along the banks of freshwater lakes and streams. They eat mainly insects, but can have the occasional small fish, mammal or reptile.

Common names include Geyr's dabb lizard, Geyr's spiny-tailed lizard, Sahara mastigure, Saharan spiny-tailed lizard, and Saharan Yellow Uromastyx.
